What is your comfort food?

com·fort food

/ˈkəmfərt fo͞od/

noun

food that provides consolation or a feeling of well-being, typically any with a high sugar or other carbohydrate content and associated with childhood or home cooking.

That is a lot of diverse ideas packed into one definition!

Yes, carbohydrates tend to be associated with being a comfort food. And we tend to eat comfort food to lift our spirits. But, not all aspects apply to every person. When you consider individuals, it’s clear that “comfort food” means something different to all of us.

For many, Matzo Ball Soup has strong associations with their childhood. Imagine if your first taste of every bowl of this warm, hearty soup flooded you with memories of your mother making the same recipe every year – the smell of chicken cooking, the sight of her brightly colored apron, and the feeling of the dough on your hands as you help her roll it into round shapes.

For others, Matzo Ball Soup brings the comfort of over 3,000 years of tradition – a tradition that connects them to ancestors and to all their descendants, as friends and family gather for a ceremonial meal, sharing food from the same plate.

Maybe your life hasn’t been imbued with moments centered around this broth-based chicken, vegetable, and dumpling soup. Anyone – even you – can form strong memories and be comforted when you enjoy this delicious meal. This was the case with our friend Juanita, who had tears in her eyes when she first tried it.

Comfort foods also provide a sense of well-being. There’s science behind it. Highly palatable foods cause our brain to release dopamine, that hormone behind pleasure, reward and motivation. But every one of us finds different flavors pleasant and we each have different motivations for seeking out specific foods.

Maybe your taste-buds salivate at the thought of sweet treats, like Open Kitchen’s Plum & Ginger Galette, which you can order now, have delivered, and enjoy the night it arrives or freeze and savor at your leisure or for when you have a rough day.

Or maybe you turn your cheek to sweet and have embraced your love of savory foods, especially those with the characteristic umami flavor, such as Open Kitchen’s Housemade Classic Korean Cabbage Kimchi.

For others, well-being and comfort come from eating healthy foods. They just feel better when they nourish their body with nutrient-dense meals. If that sounds like you, you might want to try Open Kitchen’s Roasted Root Vegetables with Farro & Chickpeas drizzled with Lemony Tahini Sauce. It comes with an Arugula & Fennel Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy a comfort food during these hot summer days!

"On a hot day in Virginia, I know of nothing more comforting than a fine spiced pickle, brought up trout-like from the sparkling depths of that aromatic jar below stairs in Aunt Sally's cellar."

Vietnamese BBQ Ginger Chicken for Cooked + Delivered by Open Kitchen Events

People around the globe, from Virginia to Vietnam, find comfort in sour pickled foods. If you are like Jefferson and this is a flavor you crave, try Open Kitchen’s Pantry items – Vietnamese Rainbow Carrot Pickles and Pickled Radish & Bok Choy Slaw.

Are you someone who responds to carbohydrates?  It’s not just because they elevate serotonin levels. There’s something memorable and comforting about a flaky, tender pastry  that is both light and rich and seems to melt in your mouth. You can find these qualities in Open Kitchen’s Plum & Ginger Galette and Chicken Pot Pie Galette.

And then there’s that comforting feeling of using your hands to eat beautifully grilled meats, interacting with your meal in an intimate fashion. The protein boosts your energy, but you eat slowly to capture every nuance of the complex layers of spices. Any guilt at eating Vietnamese Grilled Lemongrass Pork Ribs is assuaged by the humor of getting the succulent juice on your chin, or by the the nutritious and vibrant purple cabbage slaw, which is also served with the Vietnamese Grilled Ginger Chicken.
